About New York State Presbytery
The New York State Presbytery is one of 88 presbyteries of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). It was organized on September 15, 2000 when the Northeast Presbytery was dissolved in order to form 3 new presbyteries. New York State Presbytery became the 59th presbytery in the PCA.
A presbytery is a regional church government body, or Church Court, overseeing all the churches and pastors (what we refer to as Teaching Elders) within certain geographical bounds. The New York State Presbytery oversees the entirety of New York State with the exception of the metropolitan areas surrounding New York City and Long Island.
All pastors in our geographical bounds are members of the presbytery the church government at this regional level, and every church is allowed to send at least two of the church’s Ruling Elders to represent the church.
The presbytery, comprised of the Teaching Elders within our geographical bounds plus representative Ruling Elders from each church, meets three or more times per year to discuss things such as:
- Church Business
- Caring for God’s People
- Evangelism of the Lost
- Establishing New Churches
- Ordaining or Transferring Pastors
- Discipling Those Who Desire To Become Pastors
- Making Church-related Decisions and Policies
